- As you are aware that unprecedented heavy rains in Pakistan have caused serious floods which severely affected Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, Punjab and Balochistan. These floods have led to tragic loss of human lives and have caused serious damage to crops, physical and communication infrastructure in many parts of the country. In the worst-affected areas, entire villages have been washed away without warning by walls of flood water. Thousands of people have lost everything. Up to 100,000 households need immediate help. So far, over 1500 people have reportedly lost their lives in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province alone and more than 2.5 million peoples have been displaced.
- The Federal and Provincial governments have launched full fledged rescue and relief operations in affected areas. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is coordinating the rescue and relief operations. Emergency food items, tents, plastic mats, blankets and other essentials are being delivered to the flood-affected population on priority basis. However, the magnitude and the scale of disaster requires assistance and contributions from members of the Pakistani Diaspora towards humanitarian assistance for the people in the affected areas of Pakistan. Prime Minister of Pakistan has established a special fund titled “Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2010” for receiving donations for the flood–affectees.
- We appeal and urge all Pakistani-American Organizations in the US and members of the Pakistani community to come forward at this critical time and contribute generously to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to assist the flood victims in Pakistan. Donations can be contributed to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund 2010 through the Consulate General of Pakistan, Houston. All donations would be duly acknowledged with a proper official receipt. The list of donors will also be available on the Consulate’s website.
- Your urgent support and contribution to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund 2010 and wide dissemination of this appeal would be greatly appreciated.
